The course’s inception occurred in early 1960s when Schucman, who was a scientific and research psychologist at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, began to experience some internal dictations. She explained these dictations as originating from an interior voice that identified itself as Jesus Christ. Schucman initially resisted these activities, but with Thetford’s encouragement, she started transcribing the communications she received.
Over an amount of seven years, Schucman transcribed what can become A Program in Wonders, amounting to three quantities: the Text, the Book for Students, and the Guide for Teachers. The Text lays out the theoretical basis of the course, elaborating on the primary ideas and principles. The non dual teacher for Students contains 365 instructions, one for each time of the season, developed to steer the reader by way of a daily exercise of applying the course’s teachings. The Guide for Educators provides more guidance on the best way to understand and teach the principles of A Class in Miracles to others.
